Mimi Schippers received her B.A. in Sociology from Northeastern Illinois University and her M.S. and PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is Professor of Sociology and Gender and Sexuality Studies and Department Chair of the Department of Sociology at Tulane University.

 

Her research and teaching focus on how masculinities and femininities within and across racial and ethnic difference take shape in everyday interactions, subcultural practices, and media representations. 

 

Her latest book, Polyamory, Monogamy, and American Dreams will be available November 2019. In it she analyzes representations of monogamy and polyamory in historical biography, journalism, social science research, and popular culture. 

Her book Beyond Monogamy: Polamory and the Future of Polyqueer Sexualities was released August 2016 by New York University Press.

 

She is also author of Rockin’ Out of the Box: Gender Maneuvering in Alternative Hard Rock published by Rutgers University Press. 

 

She is an expert on the sociology of polyamory and lectures on the topic. She has also conducted workshops on negotiating polyamorous relationships and has taught courses for therapists who treat polyamorous clients.
